Chalky Paints
'High quality, durable Colourman chalky paints, offering exceptional workability and natural properties'
Colourman Paints is a long established family business, being one of the first producers of water based chalk paint.
Chris Mowe developed the paint in 1983 when he couldn't find a suitable paint for his own antique furniture restoration business, so he decided to develop his own.

Colourman paint has a soft velvety matte finish which is superbly easy to work with to create many fabulous effects and finishes. It is used by many professionals from artists to cabinet makers and picture framers. Because it is so easy to use it is also perfect for anyone to start their own furniture painting project.

  •  Our paints are low odour
  •  British Safety Standard number EN71-3
  •  Wide range of historical colours

Colourman is a business run by it's directors Rachel Halpin and Jill Hill. The paint was originally made by Rachel's father Chris Mowe for furniture restoration.  It is an emulsion paint that creates the effect of the 18th century buttermilk recipes. It is made from natural earth pigments and very low odour. Colourman paint leaves a mellow chalky finish  that can be sanded easily to give an aged distressed effect. It is ideal for creating paint finishes from shabby chic, vintage and crackle glazing or generally restoring furniture.

By painting two different colours on top of each other, fine grade wire wool can then be used to expose the under colour to create an aged look, then waxed to finish.  If you use a fine grade wire wool and buff the surface of the paint to sand down the china clay you will get a very polished hardened surface.

Colourman paints can be used for painting floor boards old or new, finishing with wax or a water based lacquer or can be left to softly age with time.  The paint can be watered down to create a wash effect for wood or walls.  It is also ideal for stencilling to create your own unique patterns on floors, walls or furniture. Colourman paint is used on internal walls but note it does not form a wipe clean surface as it does not contain oil based plasticisers.  It leaves a beautiful chalky mat finish which mellows and ages with time.  It is very quick drying and virtually odour free, we advise not to let a wet line dry as the paint drys very quickly and will leave a line.  It is fantastic for creating sponge effects especially on older bumpy walls. It is a breathable paint so is perfect for cob and older properties.
